The Cellar: The history of the Chazalettes family is inextricably intertwined with that of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Originally from Chambéry, the Chazalettes emigrated to Turin in 1860. Thanks to his experience in a winery in the Ardeche, Clemente Chazalettes quickly became technical production manager of Martini&Soda, one of the oldest and most renowned Vermouth producers . In 1876 he decided to start his own business and founded Cte. Chazalettes & Co Award-winning Vermouth and Liqueur Factory, based in via Sacchi, near Turin's Porta Nuova station. Chazalettes Vermouth was particularly appreciated by the women of the House of Savoy, so much so that Queen Margherita and Princess Laetitia of Savoy granted them the the right to bear the coat of arms of the Royal House, visible on labels and headed paper. The success achieved by the recipes, not only vermouth but also an ever-wider range of liqueurs, bitters and spirits, soon made it necessary to build a new factory, inaugurated in 1909 in the Borgata Regina Margherita in Collegno, in the western area of Turin. The new factory, of considerable size for its time, had 20,000 m2 and over 40 employees, and was located in a strategic position next to the railway. A good part of Chazalettes production was dedicated to export, which saw its golden period in the 1910s and 1920s. Shipping records of the time attest to how Chazalettes vermouth was appreciated in the four corners of the planet: from Singapore to Veracruz, from Alexandria in Egypt to Tegucigalpa, from New York to Sofia. The Americas, Canada, France and Germany are the countries where the company, thanks to a significant migratory flow of Italians, stands out for its excellent results. Chazalettes stopped producing vermouth in the 1970s, after a century of glorious tradition, continuing the production of syrups and liqueurs for a few years. The heir of the dynasty, Giovanni Chazalettes, proudly preserves the memory of his family's golden years and has not lost the desire to make the quality of this product known. Armed with the historic recipe book, a rich archive and his memories of youth, he has finally found new energy with which to embark on a new adventure. Thus began a new chapter in the history of Chazalettes, made up of the meeting of generations, the charm of an ancient liqueur art to be rediscovered and the common commitment to saving an important legacy of the city of Turin.
