The Cellar: The history of the W. & J. Graham's winery spans well over two centuries, during which the two families who wrote its pages have been renowned for their ability to produce exceptional Port wines. The Grahams' adventure with Portuguese wine began with brothers William and John, textile merchants, who in the early 1820s, decided to accept barrels of Port wine as payment. This also sparked a thriving wine trade with Scotland, their homeland. Some seventy years later, in 1890, they had the vision to expand their business by investing directly in the vineyards and land of the Douro Valley. They purchased the Quinta dos Malvedos property, home to the area's finest grapes. That same year, the famous Graham's Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia was opened, used to store barrels and mature Port wines according to their style. Today, the Graham's family name remains only associated with the company's historic brand, but the winery is actually owned and managed by another Scottish family: the Symingtons. They acquired the property in 1970, an exceptional vintage considered by all experts to be one of the finest in the history of Port. The Symingtons also have a century-long history in the Douro Valley, ensuring that the tradition and pioneering spirit of their founders are maintained in their Port production. Moreover, the company remains the only winery still owned by a single Anglo-Saxon family.
