Distillery: The history of Balvenie begins in 1890 when on the land where the distillery now stands there was little more than a decadent neoclassical villa that had been abandoned for decades. Here William Grant, already owner of Glenfiddich, decided to purchase the villa and the adjacent land. The purchase was initially aimed at protecting Glenfiddich, in fact by purchasing the nearby land no one would have been able to use the area and the water to build a competing distillery. The property was over 1,000 acres in size and contained the Balvenie New House mansion and the Balvenie Mains farm. Just two years passed after purchasing the land and the great demand for single malts required Grant to significantly increase production. So in 1892 construction began on a new distillery on the grounds of Balvenie New House. The distillery went into production on 1 May 1893 with the name of Glen Gordon, as it was initially called, while the Balvenie New House was transformed from a decadent neoclassical villa into a "more useful" malthouse. In 1894 the demand for single malt for blended is still high and 2 more stills are installed. They are quite particular, because they include a swelling above the boiler called a boil-ball, or also "Balvenie ball", and this suggests that the distillery was probably the first to use it. The distillery continues its production over the years and there are no reported periods of closure, indeed, in 1957 the distillery increased its capacity by installing two more stills, then new stills in 1965 and 1971, currently the Balvenie is equipped with 11 5 wash stills still and 6 spirit stills divided into two different still houses. Until 1973 the distillery produced single malts for the blended blends of the Grant group (Grant's Standfast) but during the year the first official bottling was also released, but in decidedly limited quantities, only with the construction of Ailsa Bay would the quantities of Balvenie begin to increase have good availability. In 1990, Kininvie was built on the Balvenie land, which included a single small still house. Next to Kininvie we have the old Convalmore distillery, purchased by the Grants in 1992 to increase the capacity of their warehouses. Balvenie is one of the few distilleries to still use its malting floor, around 15% of the distillery's needs are malted here and the barley used comes from Balvenie Mains, the remainder is purchased. In Balvenie, a more unique than rare fact for these times, there are the workshops of coopers and coppersmiths, who carry out all the work concerning the barrels and stills of the other distilleries of the group (the duration of the training as an apprentice cooper lasts 6 years).
