The award was given at the famous Barbados Rum Festival, where the rum won the Platinum Award in 2002. The consistently cool climate, along with controlled noise levels, humidity, lighting, and temperature, allow for the gentle maturation of this special rum. The various barrels in which whiskies, sherries, and wines have previously been stored give this rum its very special character. Lorena Vasquez, master blender of Ron Zacapa and Ron Botran, carefully selects the barrels to give the rum its refined flavors and aromas.

 The Distillery: Licorera Zacapaneca was founded in eastern Guatemala, in Zacapa. Founded in 1940 by three local families—Girón, Estrada, and Gordillo—production was entrusted from the beginning to a rum expert from Spain, Dr. Burgaleta. Zacapa rums are made from pure sugarcane juice, a plant grown in the volcanic soils of the southern part of the country. During the five-day fermentation process, a proprietary strain of pineapple yeast is used to ensure a unique and consistent flavor. The aging process then takes place in the highlands of the city of Quetzaltenango, at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level, in the so-called "House Above the Clouds." This location, chosen by the winery's master blender, Lorena Vasquez, features a cool climate that favors slow aging in white oak barrels, previously used for bourbon whiskey and sherry, and handcrafted by renowned artisans. Finally, Zacapa rums are created using the solera method: blending barrels of different vintages and characteristics allows for the creation of rums for sale online of excellent quality and unmistakable flavor.
