Merlot Cabernet Riserva Cortazo Südtirol Alto Adige DOC - Pfitscher
The wine-growing village of Cortaccia, originally "Cortazo," lends its name to this wine. Primarily Merlot, but also Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, from one of the best areas for these varietals: Brenntal. The name itself ("Brenntal" means "burning valley") gives a glimpse of the climate of this area. The Brenntal area lies below the Wine Road, north of the village of Cortaccia. With temperatures up to 40°C, it is one of the warmest areas in Alto Adige. The vines on the steep slope, exposed to intense sunlight, grow on clayey, sandy soil with a characteristic reddish hue. The cool downdrafts that descend from the mountain range in the evening refresh the plump grapes and give our Merlot its Alpine character. A unique terroir, therefore, predestined for the production of international red wines with Alpine character. The grapes must be at maximum physiological ripeness, with firm, crisp skins, develop aromas of ripe fruit, and have velvety tannins. The care of expert hands and carefully selected oak barrels mature the wine until it becomes our Cortazo, otherwise it's no good. Only after 12 months of maturation in barriques and another 12 months in the bottle do we release a very limited production.

The Winery: Passionate winemakers: this could be the perfect summary of the spirit that drives the Pfitscher family, a South Tyrolean family dedicated to viticulture with tireless commitment and total dedication. We are in Montagna, just south of Bolzano, in Alto Adige. The Pfitscher family winery is certified "CasaClima Wine," a seal that evaluates the building's environmental compatibility, living comfort, and energy and water consumption in wine production, from packaging to the environmental impact of transportation. The winery currently manages approximately seven hectares of vineyards, boasting some of the finest plots in the entire southern Alto Adige region. Between the rows, the vines are trained conventionally, but the primary objective is never lost sight of: minimizing any artificial intervention to harvest pure, concentrated, and natural grapes.
