Margaux AOC - Chateau La Gurgue

Margaux AOC - Chateau La Gurgue

The Margaux AOC of Château la Gurgue is based on cabernet sauvignon, a varietal which, within the blend where merlot and petit verdot are also found, represents its most evident backbone. The precision of the fruit on the nose opens up to a fine and elegant sip, with great crunchiness and ease. The grapes are vinified separately in wood, and then refined in oak barriques, 25% new, for 12 months. An interesting label not only for the precision it presents during the entire tasting, but also for the excellent quality-price ratio expressed.

Tasting Notes: It reveals itself to the eye with a beautiful ruby red color, very bright. The nose is full of hints of small red fruit, inviting and profound, also enriched by touches that veer more towards the world of spices. It enters the mouth with a full-bodied sip, with a lively tannic texture on the palate and a distinctly fruity taste. The acidity is well balanced; closes with a finish with excellent persistence.

Pairings: It pairs perfectly with meat, game and mature cheese dishes.

The Cellar: The history of Château la Gurgue is strongly linked to that of the village of Margaux in French Bordeaux. In fact, suffice it to say that two owners who followed one another at the helm of the winery over the centuries were mayors of the municipality: the first was Mr. Peixotto, a rich Portuguese banker who led the winery in 1871; the second was Mr. Camille Lenoir, who during the years of ownership increased the extension of the Château with some parcels located next to those of the famous Château Margaux. Today at the head of the cellar we find Claire Villars Lurton, a woman who, harvest after harvest, tries to do her utmost to tell the story of the Margaux terroir. Claire was initiated into her vineyard by her grandfather, Jacques Merlaut, and from a young age she held the reins not only of la Gargue, but also of other important production realities in France, such as Château Ferrière and Château Domeyne. Today there are 10 hectares of cultivation, and half of the parcels are surrounded by the Château Margaux vineyards; the terroir is characterized by a subsoil composed of fine and deep layers of gravel, which allow excellent water penetration. This favors the development of the roots downwards, and the result leads to a rich extraction of elements in the final bunches. The vines have an average age of 30 years, and the distribution in the vineyard is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon followed by 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. During the harvest, phenolic maturity is sought, with a good tannic extraction, so as to obtain a wine with personality in the cellar. Here the fermentations are carried out separately for each variety, as are the refinements, which precede the final blending phase, which is decisive for creating a coherent, harmonious and quality wine.
