Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskey 50 Years - Glenfarclas

A famous surname, five generations. Glenfarclas Distillery is a family business in the true sense of the word. The whiskey distillery is located in Ballindalloch, Scotland, and has been owned by the Grant family since 1865. This exquisite 50-year-old whiskey is in honor of the 50th anniversary of the family member and chairman of the board's first entry into the whiskey industry of directors John Grant. This whiskey was selected for bottling by Callum Fraser and managing director Douglas Belford and reflects the skill of the distillery team of 50 years ago, led at the time by Distillery Manager Douglas MacDonald. The single malt is matured for 50 years in used oloroso sherry casks, which give it a very distinctive and rich aroma. Limited to 836 bottles.

Distillery: The Glenfarclas distillery is located in Ballindalloch in the open countryside and at the foot of Ben Rinnes, from a distance it looks more like a farmhouse than a distillery, this particular architecture derives largely from its origins as a small local distillery. Founded in 1836 by Robert Hay, a local farmer, who began producing whiskey for the drovers who passed by, Glenfarclas began its production as an artisanal distillery. After about 20 years, upon Hays' death, the distillery passed to John Grant; at that time John Grant, a cattle breeder, was looking for an ideal place to raise his herd which was halfway between his farm in Glenlivet and the market in nearby Elgin, Hay's farm was perfect and The purchase of the distillery was also included in the lease agreement. Grant preferred to concentrate on crossbreeding Aberdeen Angus steers rather than whiskey so Glenfarclas was sublet to John Smith (a relative of him), who however left the company after five years to dedicate himself to his own creation, Cragganmore. After Smith's departure, management returned to the Grant family. In 1896 the Grants sold 50% of the distillery to Pattison Elder & Company of Leith, and founded Glenfarclas-Glenlivet while expanding the distillery. In 1899 Pattison Elder & Company was convicted of fraud and ended up bankrupt but Glenfarclas, which returned totally to the Grant family, survived. In 1960 the distillery increased its production capacity by increasing the number of stills from 2 to 4 and in 1973 it opened a visitors (one of the first distilleries to open one), finally in 1976, thanks to the high demand for whisky, two more stills were added. Currently it is the fifth and sixth generation of the Grants who manage the company, one of the few remaining in the sector privately owned.
